The Secret Itineraries

The notorious Secret Trails of the Doge’s Palace.
In addition to the institutional chambers, richly decorated with impressive paintings and gilded frames, the Doge’s Palace offers the possibility to visit the secret rooms where the most important activities related to the state administration and the delicate issues requiring the utmost secrecy were carried out. These rooms were the base of the Venetian Intelligence which controlled a network of spies and secret agents operating across Europe and also on other continents.
You will see Secret Chancellery offices and the infamous torture chamber where the Lords of Night interrogated those suspected of crimes.
Visiting the Piombi or Leads, so called because the cells are under the roof covered with lead plates, we will talk about the famous escape of Giacomo Casanova, and we will see the cell in which he was locked up.
There will also be a chance to admire one of Venice’s architectural wonders: the huge structure of attic above the huge Grand Council room, where the shipwrights of the Venetian Shipyards created an outstanding wooden structure with beams and buttresses to support the ceiling of the underlying room.
The second part of the tour includes the institutional rooms of the Palazzo Ducale where you can admire many Renaissance paintings by great artists like Titian, Veronese and Tintoretto.
Finally, crossing the legendary Bridge of Sighs, you will see the new prisons built starting from 1582.
